Amit Yoran, a prominent figure in cybersecurity and CEO of Tenable Holdings, passed away on January 3, 2025, at the age of 54, following a battle with cancer.

Yoran’s career was marked by significant contributions to the cybersecurity landscape. He co-founded Riptech in 1998, a pioneering firm dedicated to protecting government and corporate systems from cyber threats. His expertise led to his appointment as the founding director of the National Cyber Security Division at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in 2003, where he was instrumental in establishing the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team.

In 2017, Yoran took the helm at Tenable, guiding the company through a successful initial public offering in 2018 and solidifying its position as a leader in exposure management solutions. Under his leadership, Tenable achieved significant milestones, reflecting his unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence in the cybersecurity industry.

In early December 2024, Yoran announced a temporary medical leave to focus on cancer treatment. During this period, Tenable’s board appointed CFO Steve Vintz and COO Mark Thurmond as co-CEOs to oversee operations. Following Yoran’s passing, Vintz and Thurmond continue to lead the company while the board searches for a permanent CEO.

Yoran’s passing is a significant loss to the cybersecurity community. He is remembered not only as a visionary leader and innovator but also as a mentor and friend who inspired many to make the digital world safer. He is survived by his wife and three children.
