FYERS American Gambits, a franchise competing in the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, has released a trailer for a documentary titled “American Gambits,” which is set to premiere on the streaming platform ZEE5.
The documentary follows the making of the franchise, covering the people involved, the competitive environment of the Global Chess League, and the process of building a chess team designed around entertainment and fan engagement rather than the game alone.
Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, who co-owns the franchise, shared the trailer on his social media accounts following its release, drawing attention to the film ahead of its digital premiere.
Background on the franchise
American Gambits was founded by Prachura PP, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Venkat K. Narayana. The team fields a roster of international chess players and competes in the Global Chess League, a franchise-based competition that has drawn comparisons to other sports leagues for its team-ownership model and entertainment-oriented presentation of chess.
The franchise has built part of its identity around packaging chess with narrative and personality-driven content, an approach the documentary extends into long-form video.
What the documentary covers
According to the franchise, the film looks at the personalities and decision-making behind the team, the pressures of competing in the Global Chess League, and the broader process of establishing a sports franchise around a game historically associated with individual, rather than team, competition.
Speaking about the release, Prachura PP, CEO and co-owner of FYERS American Gambits, said:
“Chess is often experienced through the moves that happen on the board, but there is an entire world behind those moves—the personalities, the preparation, the pressure, the ambition and the relationships that make a team what it is. With American Gambits, we have always wanted to tell a bigger story around chess. This documentary gives fans an opportunity to see that journey from a much closer perspective. We are delighted that audiences across India will now be able to experience the story on ZEE5.”
Timing and context
The documentary’s release coincides with preparations for the franchise’s next season in the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League. It also comes as chess continues to draw interest from sectors outside the traditional chess community, including technology, entertainment, and business, with several franchises in the league experimenting with content formats aimed at broadening their audience beyond dedicated chess followers.
The documentary is now streaming on ZEE5.
