While headlines chase India’s foundational-model unicorns, a quieter set of AI startups is doing something arguably harder — proving measurable impact in cancer screening, farming, and disability inclusion, with far smaller budgets and far less attention
Every conversation about Indian AI in 2026 tends to circle back to the same handful of names — Sarvam AI’s sovereign language models, Krutrim’s base-model ambitions, or the mega-funding rounds announced at the India AI Impact Summit. That coverage is deserved, but it also crowds out a different category of Indian AI company: ones that never built a foundation model, never chased a unicorn valuation, and instead pointed AI at one specific, unglamorous problem until it moved a real number.
Here are four of them, along with what they’ve actually achieved — not what their pitch decks claim.
Karkinos Healthcare: Catching Cancer Before It’s Too Late
India records roughly a million new cancer cases every year, and a majority are still diagnosed at an advanced stage, largely due to limited access to screening in smaller towns. Karkinos Healthcare, a Reliance Industries-backed oncology platform founded in 2020, built an AI-driven risk-assessment system to change that math.
The platform runs cancer risk surveys — up to 70 questions drawn from clinical guidelines — and has been used by over 400,000 Indians to date, according to a Google Cloud case study on the company. Of those assessed, roughly 12% have been flagged as high risk and guided toward further screening through Karkinos’s “Virtual Command Center.” The company also operates across a network of around 70 partner clinics in multiple Indian states, and in 2026 it crossed the milestone of screening more than 100,000 women for cervical cancer using WHO-recommended HPV DNA testing. Separately, Karkinos has partnered with US-based C2i Genomics to bring AI-powered whole-genome cancer monitoring to Indian labs — a first for the country.
None of this involves a chatbot or a large language model. It’s AI quietly doing triage at population scale, in a country where the bigger barrier to cancer survival has always been when someone gets tested, not how sophisticated the test is.
Fyllo: Precision Farming Without the Buzzwords
Bengaluru-based Fyllo, founded in 2019 by Sudhanshu Rai and Sumit Sheoran — both from farming families — builds IoT sensors paired with AI models that tell farmers exactly when to irrigate, fertilise, or watch for pests, instead of relying on fixed schedules passed down for generations.
The results are concrete and independently reported: farmers using Fyllo’s platform have cut chemical usage by roughly 35% and irrigation needs by about 50%, together saving an estimated 100 billion litres of water and cutting close to 4 million kilograms of carbon emissions, per the company’s disclosures at its most recent funding round. Separately, Fyllo has reported serving over 8,000–13,000 farmers across more than 20 crop types, with users seeing yield increases of around 25% and income gains of up to 30%. A Solapur farmer profiled by Inc42 had been running 11–12 irrigation cycles a season out of habit; Fyllo’s sensor data let him cut that down based on what his soil actually needed, not what tradition dictated.
It’s a useful reminder that in Indian agri-AI, the “innovation” that moves the needle is often just accurate, timely data reaching a farmer who never had it before.
DeepVisionTech.AI: Letting the Deaf Community Make a Phone Call
Roughly 100 million Indians live with some degree of hearing loss, and for most day-to-day communication — a phone call, a work meeting, a customer service line — that’s still a wall most technology doesn’t address. DeepVisionTech.AI, founded in 2019 by former Amazon employee Jayasudan Munsamy, built LetsTalkSign, an AI system that interprets sign language in real time and translates it into speech and text, and back again — enabling genuine two-way conversation rather than one-directional captioning.
Munsamy’s team discovered through early research that captions alone don’t solve the problem many companies assume they do — a large share of India’s deaf community reads Indian Sign Language more fluently than written text, so subtitle-only “accessibility” tools were solving the wrong problem. DeepVisionTech.AI has since expanded from a computer-vision enterprise tool into an integrated accessibility platform spanning communication, workplace inclusion, and education.
Bleetech Innovations: Turning a College Project Into a Classroom Tool for 12,000+ Students
Founded in 2015 by MIT Pune alumni Jahnavi Joshi and Nupura Kirloskar, Bleetech Innovations started life as a smartwatch that let deaf users feel music through vibration. That early experiment revealed a much bigger gap: the shortage of Indian Sign Language (ISL) educational content in Indian classrooms.
Bleetech’s BleeTV app now offers over 1,000 ISL videos and has reached more than 12,000 users across 15 states, including roughly 600 students and 100 teachers in its home base of Pune, according to a case study published on the Indian government’s Frontier Tech platform. Because affordable ISL video kits reduce a school’s dependency on hiring a dedicated interpreter, the tool has particular value for smaller, resource-constrained schools trying to comply with India’s Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 — legislation that mandates accessible learning material but rarely comes with the budget to produce it.
What Connects All Four
None of these companies show up on India’s AI unicorn lists. None of them are training foundational models or chasing GPU allocations. What they share instead is a pattern worth noticing: each one picked a single, measurable human problem — a missed cancer diagnosis, a wasted irrigation cycle, an unanswered phone call, a classroom without an interpreter — and built AI narrowly enough to actually solve it.
That’s a useful corrective to the current AI narrative, which tends to reward scale and model size over demonstrated outcomes. In a country where the AI Impact Summit itself flagged over 100 “population-scale impact” startups working in health-tech, ed-tech, and agri-tech, the four above are simply representative of a much larger, quieter ecosystem — one that’s arguably doing more to change how ordinary Indians live than any leaderboard benchmark.
